About Charley
With 30 years of experience, Charley Shumway specializes in tax strategy and consulting for complex partnership structures, funds, and family-owned businesses. He advises clients across the real estate, private equity, and venture capital sectors—including commercial and residential developers, joint ventures, hospitality groups, opportunity funds, and investment entities.
Charley is known for his deep technical expertise in tax planning, deal structuring, partnership formations, reorganizations, liquidations, and complex income allocations. He regularly supports clients with intricate waterfall analyses and provides representation before both the IRS and the Utah State Tax Commission.
Before joining Tanner, Charley held roles at a Big 4 accounting firm as well as regional and local firms, building a well-rounded perspective across firm sizes and client types. He earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in accounting from Southern Utah University and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the Utah Association of Certified Public Accountants (UACPA). When he’s not working, Charley likes to BBQ and spend time with family.
