About Shawn
Shawn leads the Credit & Incentives practice at Tanner LLC, bringing over 28 years of experience advising clients on federal and state tax credits and incentives, with a primary focus on research credits. His work spans the full lifecycle of tax credit projects—from initial scoping and implementation to project management, IRS and state audit support, and evaluation of benefits for financial statements.
Prior to joining Tanner, Shawn spent 16 years in the Big Four, most recently with EY in the Southeast region. He began his career in Deloitte’s National R&D Tax Credit group and also spent time in their Accounting Methods & Periods National Practice Group in Washington, DC. Over the years, he has worked with a wide range of companies—from startups to Fortune 50 corporations—across industries such as Technology, Software, Life Sciences, Aerospace & Defense, Consumer Products, and Manufacturing.
Shawn is a frequent speaker on the R&D credit and is admitted to the California Bar. He earned his JD from BYU’s J. Reuben Clark Law School and an LLM in Taxation from Georgetown University Law Center.
Outside of work, Shawn enjoys golf, scuba diving, and deep-sea fishing.
